| The Chateau of Lourmarin is the first Renaissance Chateau in Provence.
However it retains certain architectural features of a previous era such as the well presered gargoyles that serve both to evacuate rain-water and to protect the chateau from evil spirits. |

The “Château-Vieux”
Built by Foulques d’agoult around 1475, the “Chateau-Vieux”, although a fortress has architectural grace on account of its Italian Loggia and galleries. |
| The Renaissance Wing called “Chateau-Neuf” The facade of the Renaissance wing was built from 1526 and dominate the upper terrace. It is on three levels and retains a great purity of style, being separated by horizontal cornices. Symetry of the facade is underlined by the mullion windows framed by doric pillars. |

The great staircase The great double spiral staircase, a real architectural masterpiece, is unique in Provence. Decorated with sculpted figures and a charming frieze, the staircase ends at the top of the tower under a perfectly curved cupola supported by a slender column |
| The monumental fireplace The “Sallestre” was the main reception room of the Chateu and retains the original 16th century floor tiles. However, it is the monumental fireplace that instantly captures the eye. It comprises two distinct parts :
The decorative choice was obviously due to the discovery of the New World some sixty years prior to the construction of the Renaissance wing. |

Jeu de piste pour petits et grands
Pour passer un bon moment en famille, un jeu de piste très ludique est proposé aux jeunes visiteurs. La visite sera amusante et enrichissante pour les enfants.
Le concours « Jeunes écrivains » pour les 8 à 15 ans qui est organisé par le Château, remporte un vif succès auprès de notre jeune public.
Durant tout l’été vous pourrez vous désaltérer à la buvette installée sur les terrasses du Château.
The Chateau of Lourmarin is “twinned” with the Abbaye of Silvacane.

Since 1st January 2008, The Abbaye of Silvacane is twinned with the Chateau of Lourmarin, which means that visiteurs can beneficit from a reduced entrance fee to the second site visited. For Further informatin see our brochure.

History of the Château
The Chateau was classified as an historic monument in 1973
The oldest part of the Chateau was built in the 15th century by Foulques d’Agoult, on a ruins of a 12th century fortress.
In 1526, Louis d’Algoult-Montauban and his wife, Blanche de Lévis-Ventadour, decided to enlarge the “Chteau-Vieux” with the addition of the Renaissance Wing, the first Renaissance building in Provence.
In 1920, just as the Chateau was about to be sold to an entrepreneur for its stone, it was providenttially discovered and purchased at the last minute by Robert Laurent-Vibert, an Industrialist from Lyon, owner of Petrol Hahn.
He was also a scholar and professor as well as a member of the French School in Rome.
Robert Laurent-Vibert died in a road accident in 1925. In his will, he donated the Chateau to the “Académie des Sciences, Agriculture, Arts et Belles Lettres (Academy of Science, Agriculture and Humanities) of Aix-en-Provence, on condition that it should set up a Foundation to help young artists and organise cultural events.
This is how the Fondation de Lourmarin Robert Laurent-Vibert was created in 1927.
